PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (June 20, 2011) -– Devon Brown’s six birdies has her in the lead after the first round of the NCGA Women’s Championship at Spyglass Hill.

Emily Childs stands three back of the lead.

Brown, a Rancho Santa Fe native, posted a 3-under-par 70 heading into the final round. A rising sophomore finishing a standout freshman season at Northwestern University, Brown finished third on the team’s scoring average list with a 76.95.

Defending champion Emily Childs shot an even-par 73 to stand in second place. As a junior at the University of California, Childs set a women’s course record at Green Valley Golf Course, shooting a six-under 66 during a qualifying round last September.

Four players sit in third place, six back from the lead.

In the senior division, Sandy Woodruff of Valley Gardens GC took the lead after the first round with a 3-over-par 76. Her round included four birdies and an eagle at 18.

Two-time defending champion Patricia Cornett sits in second, one stroke back. Marianne Towersey, 2007 champion, carded a six-over-par 79 to stand in third.

The championship concludes tomorrow at Poppy Hills.

ABOUT THE NCGA Women's Amateur

The NCGA Women’s Amateur Championship is the association’s premier event for female golfers. Field limited to 76 eligible players in the championship division and 24 players in the senior division. All female golfers with a handicap index of 7.4 or less (or 18.4 or less for seniors) are eligible to enter. Format: 36 holes stroke play (18 holes per day).
