S. Carolina Amateur Match Play: USC Upstate players advance
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (June 17, 2011) – When Friday's matches started in the South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship at Carolina Country Club, three of USC Upstate's golfers were among the 32 players teeing off in the morning. By the end of the day, Spartans Nelson Dickson and Adam Goins, advanced to the quarterfinals accounting for 25 percent of the remaining eight golfers in the tournament.
Dickson (Spartanburg) played in the upper bracket. He opened play in the Round of 32, taking on Jones Brown from Columbia. He claimed a 3&2 victory to advance to the Round of 16. In the Round of 16, he claimed a 2&1 victory over Laurens' Walter Todd to advance to the quarterfinals.
Dickson will battle Kershaw's Cary Phillips Saturday morning. He is playing in the same bracket as defending champion and No. 1 seed Todd White, who also advanced to the quarters.
Goins (Gaffney), who was a freshman for Upstate last season and who won an individual tournament championship, opened up play in the lower bracket and claimed a dominating 5&3 victory over Spartanburg's Andrew Hewitt to advance to the Round of 16. He faced a familiar foe in the Round of 16 when he faced off against Spartan teammate Tyler Comer (Pacolet Mills). Comer had claimed a 2&1 victory over Lee Palms from Greenville to advance to the Round of 16. Goins took the lead on the back nine and took a 3&1 victory to advance to the quarterfinals.
Goins will open play on Saturday against Charleston's Alex Ellis. Ellis claimed a pair of 4&3 and 4&2 wins on Friday.
