DALLAS, Tex. (June 15, 2011) -– Californian Jay Burlison has a one-stroke lead after Wednesday’s opening round of the 39th Southern Junior at storied Dallas Athletic Club. Burlison, a high school sophomore, used a power game to card 5-under-par 67. He posted four birdies and an eagle 3 by reaching the 510-yard 10th hole with driver-wedge to within six feet.
Burlison, 16 and youngest of the leaders in the featured 15-18 age group, once won the U.S. Kids World Championship at Pinehurst.
A.J. Crouch of Jacksonville joined a trio just one shot back at 68 by rolling in an 80-foot putt on the final hole for his seventh birdie of the day. Also at 68 are Grant Hirschman of Collierville, TN, and Wilson Reeder of Tupelo, MS
William Gordon of Davidson, NC, and Sam Burns of Shreveport shot 73 to share the lead in the 13-14 age division. Low man among the local Dallas entries is Cade Storey at 71.
The field of 156 players from 21 states and Mexico will be cut after Thursday’s second round. The 54-hole Southern Golf Association event concludes Friday.
