Missouri Junior Match Play Championship: Rutledge downs Huber

HARTSBURG, MO (JUNE 15, 2011) -- The final round of the Missouri Junior Match Play Championship between Michael Huber of Jefferson City, MO and Mitch Rutledge of Creve Couer, MO teed off at 8 a.m.

Both players had successful seasons with their respective high schools with Rutledge winning the Class 2 Championship and Huber finishing 2nd in the Class 3 Championship. Rutledge started off the first round strong and never looked back.

He finished the first 18 holes with 9 birdies and firing a round of 70 to take a 3up advantage going into the final 18 holes. Huber played solid throughout the tournament, and finished the first 18 holes with a +1 73.

Rutledge continued to play well in the final 18 holes never allowing Huber to gain any ground. Rutledge ended the Championship by winning the 31st hole, and securing his victory 7&5. Congratulations to both finalists for enduring the long week on the course.

The quarter-final matches teed off first thing Wednesday morning, with the final 8 players battling for a spot in the semifinals.

Grant Grego began the morning round right where he left off yesterday by winning his quarterfinal match 8 and 7. Grego qualified for the match play portion as the 32 seed, and has been playing very well throughout the tournament.

Will Echelmeier, Michael Huber, and Mitch Rutledge also won their morning matches to advance to the Semifinal round in the afternoon.

After battling for the lead throughout the front nine, Huber won his semi-final match against Grego 3 and 1.

Rutledge played a great round winning his match 3 and 2 over Will Echelmeier.

The 36- hole final between Michael Huber and Mitch Rutledge will tee off at 8 tomorrow morning.
