British Columbia Mid-Amateur: Koster Leads by One
CAMPBELL RIVER, BC (June 7, 2011) --
Defending Champion Greg Koster shot a 3-
under-par 69 to take the first round lead at
the BC Mid-Amateur Men's Championship at the
Storey Creek Golf Club in Campbell River, BC.
Koster, 39, had a consistent round,
which included two birdies an eagle, giving him
a one shot lead over Paul Hansen, of Cordova
Bay Golf Club, heading into the second round.
"I started out with five pars in a row
and then on the par-5 6th I had a great drive
and followed that up with a 3-wood to within
two feet of the hole. I couldn't hit it any
better and ended up with an eagle," said
Koster, a member at Crown Isle Golf Resort.
"Heading into the tournament I probably
wouldn't have considered myself a favorite
because I wasn't playing that well. The past
couple days I've played better and after
today's round I'm feeling more confident now."
Sitting in a five-way tie for third
place at 1-under-par 70 are Geoffrey Butt,
Norm Bradley, Matt Tindale, Steven Dales and
Cory Renfrew.
Meanwhile, Hansen's
2-under-par 70 gives the 46 year-old the lead
in the Master-40 division.
"My
highlight of the day was definitely my eagle on
the par-5 4th hole," said Hansen. "I put my
drive in the rough and had to lay-up which put
me about 100 yards out. I played a wedge
and one-hopped it into the hole."
The
second round will tee-off on split tees (Nos. 1
and 10) beginning at 7:30 a.m. PST on
Wednesday, June 8.
