Charlottetown, P.E.I., CANADA (August 24, 2005) -– Garth Collings of Matlock,
Man. shot an even-par 72 for a two-day-total four-under 140 Wednesday at Belvedere
Golf Club to take the second-round lead at the Canadian Mid-Amateur Championship,
conducted by the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA).
Collings shared the opening-round lead with Peter Malo of Beaconsfield, Que.
who dropped to a tie for seventh after shooting a second-round 78.
“The pin positions were really good today but I didn’t have a lot
of chances at birdie,” said Collings, whose low score on the day helped
secure his Manitoba team’s first Inter-provincial team championship. “I
had a lot of distractions last year but this year I’ve been able to concentrate
on golf.”
Rob Collins of Yarmouth, N.S. and John Archibald of Truro, N.S. both shot a
pair of 72’s over the first two rounds to sit tied for second at even
par. Bruce North of St. Norbert, Man., David Schultz of Calgary and local favourite
Tim Yorke of Kensington, P.E.I. shot two-day-totals of two-over-par 146 to tie
for fourth. There is a lot of competition at the top of the leaderboard as seventeen
players are within six shots of the lead.
In the Inter-provincial team championship Manitoba (434) won their first R.
Bruce Forbes trophy by four shots over Saskatchewan who finished second at 438.
Ontario made a charge from sixth place to finish third at 439 while defending
champion New Brunswick (441) took fourth place, one stroke ahead of Quebec (442).
Following the completion of Thursday’s final round of stroke play, the
field will be cut to the low 32 players for match play. Any playoff for the
final match-play seeds will take place immediately following the completion
of the round.

position in the draw determined by his qualifying score. The first and second
round of matches will take place Friday, August 26, with the quarterfinal and
semi-final matches held Saturday, August 27. The 18-hole championship match
will take place Sunday, August 28. The Inter-provincial Team Championship for
the R. Bruce Forbes trophy features four-member teams competing in conjunction
with the first two rounds of stroke play with the best three of four scores
counting towards the overall team total.
