Canadian Mid-Am: Two Share Opening Round Lead
Charlottetown, P.E.I. (August 23, 2005) -– Peter Malo of Beaconsfield, Que. and Garth Collings of Matlock, Man. fired matching four-under-par 68’s Tuesday at Belvedere Golf Club to share the opening-round lead at the Canadian Mid-Amateur Championship, conducted by the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA).

“I competed in the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship last week and played well so I would like to keep the momentum going,” said Malo, who finished runner-up in 2002 to seven-time champion Graham Cooke. “I’m really not thinking about my lead right now…the competition is extremely tough and anyone could win at this point.”

Collings low score on the day helped put his Manitoba team up by one-stroke going into the final round of the Inter-provincial team championship tomorrow.

“It was easy today…I didn’t get ahead of myself,” said Collings, who won the 2003 Canadian Mid-Amateur Championship. “I’m just trying to help the team out at this point.”

Karl Parrington of Saskatoon, Sask. shot an opening-round three-under par 69 to sit alone in third while Bruce North of St. Norbert, Man., Mike Mannion of Gibsons, B.C., Michael Jackson of Collingwood, Ont. and Richard York of Fredericton, N.B. all shot 70 to tie for fourth.

Defending champion Frank Van Dornick of Camrose, Alta. had a rough day shooting an opening-round 82. Seven-time champion Graham Cooke of Hudson, Que. finished the day with a brilliant chip-in for birdie and sits four-shots off the lead at 73. Host club President and P.E.I. team member Dave Shellington fired an opening-round 73 to sit tied for 17th.

In the hunt for the R. Bruce Forbes trophy, the Manitoba team of Collings (68), North (70), Dave Anderson of Winnipeg (74) and Mark Starodub of Selkirk (77) fired a team-total 212 to take a one-stroke lead into Wednesday’s final round of team play. Saskatchewan sits in second at 213 while defending champion New Brunswick is third at 215. The Canadian Mid-Amateur Inter-provincial team championship will wrap up Wednesday with the teams teeing off in the morning draw.
