ORCHARD LAKE, Mich. (May 23, 2011) -- Heading into the 2nd GAM Senior/Mid-Am Team Championship Bill Zylstra had a heavy decision as to who would take the place of his teammate Tim Katanski after the pair captured the inaugural title at Plum Hollow last year.
Fortunately Zylstra was able to make a call to the bullpen and, former Major Leaguer, Mike Ignasiak picked up. As it turns out Ignasiak filled in nicely as the team went on to capture the title today at Orchard Lake Country Club by 2 strokes over the duo of Steve Nichols and Morrie Hoevel and the father-son tandem of Mike and Steve Fedewa.
This unique team event pairs a Senior (age 55 and up) player alongside a Mid-Amateur (25 and up) to compete in a morning four-ball and an afternoon alternate shot format.
Tim Coffey and Kirk Geiling led after a superb 65 in the morning four-ball.
Zylstra and Ignasiak were able to make hay during the alternate shot format posting a tremendous 68. The team’s 68 was 4-strokes better than any other team during the afternoon round.
After today’s performance the Zylstra/Ignasiak combo probably won’t change the rotation much from now until next year when the 3rd GAM Senior/Mid-Am Team is held at Oakland University’s Katke and Sharf courses.
