RALEIGH, NC (May 19, 2011) –- 60-year-old Paul Simson of Raleigh, NC posted a five-under par 67 to win his 23rd CGA championship and 5th North Carolina Senior Amateur title by nine strokes over Logan Jackson of Winston-Salem, NC.
Simson, who is a member at North Ridge Country Club, carded four birdies, one eagle and one bogey in the final round to set a new championship low score of 201. Simson was the only player to shoot in the 60’s all three rounds.
“It was a very special week,” Simson said. “Winning a CGA championship is always special but winning at my home club makes it more so." He is now one win away from tying Dale Morey’s record of 24 CGA championship titles.
Simson is now two-for-two in CGA majors held at North Ridge Country Club. He won the 1997 Carolinas Mid-Amateur title in a playoff over Steve Jones of Oak Ridge, NC.
Simson opened his round by holing his second shot from the fairway to quickly set the pace. “That is the first time I have ever eagled number one," Simson noted.
