Higginbottom holds on to win Keperra Bowl
BRISBANE, Australia (May 13, 2011) --Jake Higginbottom is the 2011 Keperra Bowl Champion after completing a two-under par round (70) at the Keperra Country Golf Club.
Sitting on an 3-shot overnight lead and showing little sign of nerves through his opening holes, Higginbottom's final round included three birdies and an eagle to finish one shot clear of the field on 273 (-15).
Higginbottom, 17, has had a stellar run after wining last week's Queensland Amateur at Arundel Hills Country Club.
"I've been playing consistently for the last few weeks and it is a great way to finish the week," Higginbottom said.
"I was unaware of the other player's scores during the round. I didn't even notice the leader board after the front nine and just worried about my own game."
New South Wales's Matthew Stieger secured second place at 274 (-14) following his week's best score, a 6-under par (66). Stieger (St Michaels) started the final round in commanding fashion going into the back nine 6-under the card. Stieger was unable to capitalize on his strong start, his final score leaving him one shot short of the winner.
"I just couldn't put it together on the back," Steiger said after handing in his score card.
Queensland's Men's Stroke Play Champion Daniel McGraw (Gailes) finished on 278 (-10) in outright third. Following a final round 1-under par (71). Daniel Bringolf finished a further stroke back on 279 (-9) with a final round 3- under par (69).
Higginbottom now joins an elite group of golfers in winning the tile including Andrew Dodt (2007), Mark Leishman (2005), Bronsan La Cassie (2002) and Wayne Perske (2000, 1998).
