Louisville takes Round 1 lead at Big East Championship
PALM HARBOR, Fla. – Notre Dame and Louisville are tied for first place on a day that saw almost ideal weather conditions for the first round of play. The Notre Dame women shot a 295 as a team to hold a 12-shot advantage over Georgetown after day one. The 295 is the lowest single-round team score shot by a BIG EAST squad at Innisbrook, topping USF’s 296 in the second-round of last year’s championship. The Irish had three players shoot 73 or below and own the top two spots on the individual leaderboard. Irish Junior Becca Huffer leads individually after shooting an even-par score of 72. Huffer was consistent in her round, with one bogey, one birdie and 16 pars. She finished her round with 12-straight pars. Huffer is followed by teammates senior So-Hyun Park and freshman Kristina Nhim, who each shot one-over par, 73 to tie for second place. Park had six birdies to lead the field, sinking birdies in four of her first five holes. Georgetown sits in second place after shooting 307 in the first round. The Hoyas were led by junior Eunae Jo and sophomore Jordan Redfield, who both shot 75 to tie for sixth place. Louisville is in third with a first-round score of 308. The Cardinals have never finished lower than second in the BIG EAST Championship. On the men’s side, Notre Dame and Louisville each shot 293 to tie for first after the first round of play. Both teams had three players shoot 75 or below through the first 18 holes on the Copperhead Course. The Irish were led by junior Max Scodro, who is tied for third with USF’s Robby Carl after shooting a 70. Scodro led the field with six birdies, doing most of his damage of the par-5s where he was three-under. Louisville senior Karsten Clements posted a 69 to tie for first individually with Cincinnati senior Joe Kastelic. Clements had just two bogeys while knocking in four birdies. Kastelic did his damage on the back nine, shooting a 32 on the final nine holes after going one-over on the front nine. The Cardinals also had strong performances by junior Sebastian Szirmak and sophomore Chris Malec, who shot 73 and 74 respectively. Seton Hall and Georgetown are tied for third, seven shots off the lead. Both teams carded 300 for the first round. The Pirates were led by junior Troy Spencer, who shot a 72 to tie for sixth. Sophomore Curtis Loop was the top performer for the Hoyas, also firing a 72. Second round action begins Monday at 8 a.m. Eastern.
