Sugar Land, TX (March 27, 2011) -- The 2011 South Mid-Amateur Championship came to a close Sunday afternoon with Mike McCaffrey standing atop the leaderboard at 11-under par 205.
Riverbend Country Club proved to be a wonderful host club for the Texas Golf Association’s second South regional championship for 2011. The wind that played havoc with the field the first two rounds did not stick around as eight players came in under par for today’s round. Mike McCaffrey, of League City, played with poise in the final round after moving to the top of the leaderboard after round 2. Going into the final round McCaffrey held a three shot lead over Katy’s Chris Forbes and an eight stroke lead over Riverbend’s own Bart Worthing.
Playing in the final pairing, Worthing and Forbes started out in great shape with birdies on the par five 1st hole, only to be shown up with an eagle 3 by McCaffrey. McCaffrey’s steady play continued until he reached the par three 7th hole, where he picked up his only bogey of his final round. Determined to get back on track, McCaffrey proceeded to birdie the par five 8th hole and made the turn at 2-under 34. With a birdie on the par five 12th hole and a par on the closing par five 18th, McCaffrey played the par five’s at 4-under par for his final round to turn in a 3-under par 69 and a three day total of 11-under par 205.
Forbes, the leader after the first round, made the turn at even-par 36. The Katy resident lit up the back side with four birdies to finish the final round with a 4-under par 68 and a three day total of 9-under par 207.
