BLOOMINGTON, IL (August 11, 2005) -- Brad Marek (Arlington Heights) wins 2005 Illinois State Amateur Championship finishing 12-under par (272) at Crestwicke Country Club in Bloomington, Ill.
The top three players are 21-years-old or younger. Marek, age 21; Matt Miller (Bloomington), age 20 and Nick Bova (Bloomington), age 20 finished respectively.
Marek was one shot off the State Am lowest winning score under-par record after bogeying the last hole. Jerry Haas holds the 13-under par record after winning the 1984 State Am at Mt. Hawley Country Club (par 288) in Peoria, Ill.
Marek will be a senior at Indiana University this fall. He played in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship and made it to the quarterfinals and won the 2005 North Shore Amateur and 2005 Joliet Amateur.
Mike Henry (Bloomington) tied Bova at third (9-under par). Rich Franklin (Hinsdale) and Todd Mitchell (Bloomington) tied for fifth at 8-under par.
Four of the top five leaders are Bloomington residents. Bloomington's own Miller, Bova, Henry and Mitchell represented.
Additionally, a three-some of current Illinois State University golf teammates, Matt Maskel (Morris), Miller and Kris Wildenradt (Delavan), also competed well in Bloomington.
Several past State Am winners have gone on to play professionally: Roy Biancalana (1983), Erik Ciotti (1997), Rich Dukelow (2001), Jim Jamieson (1967), Gary Hallberg (1978, 1979), Mark Hensby (1994), David Ogrin (1980), D.A. Points (1995, 1998, 1999) and Robert Zender (1967, 1970, 1971).
The 2006 Illinois State Am will be held at Edgewood Valley Country Club in LaGrange, Ill.
