VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (10/16/10) –– The 24-golfer Carolinas squad posted a six-point victory in final-day singles matches against their Virginias counterparts to score a 28-20 triumph as the 65th Captain’s Putter Matches concluded today at a windy Bayville Golf Club.
Possessors of a two-point advantage following the first day four-ball and foursome matches, Carolinas registered a 15-9 victory in singles’ encounters. On the last day, Virginias’ seniors won singles by one point (4½-3½), but Carolinas were seven-point victors (11½-4½) in the regular division.
Carolinas posted its fifth win in the last six meetings between the two teams, and notched its first win on Virginia soil since 2006 when the team triumphed at Kinloch Golf Club in Manakin-Sabot, Va. The matches annually rotate between sites in the Virginias and the Carolinas.
Over the two days of matches, Carolinas’ regulars outscored Virginias by 11 points (21½-10½ ), while Virginias seniors held the advantage, 9½-6½ .
With final-day regulars’ matches knotted at two-and-a-half, in the last 11 regulars matches, Carolinas outscored the hosts 9-2 and won each of the last five singles’ encounters. In that late stretch, the Greensboro trio of Will Bowman, Ryan Heisey, Scott Harvey as well as Steve Liebler (Irmo, S.C.) and Paul Simson (Raleigh, N.C.) registered victories for Carolinas. Simson, the reigning USGA Senior Amateur champion, continued his strong play, going unblemished in the matches, and Heisey tied him with a team-leading three points.
North Carolinians Pat Thompson (Asheville), Skip Taylor (Flat Rock) and Gary Robinson (Fayetteville) for the surge started with victories in matches six through eight. Northern Virginian Scott Marino of Fairfax posted Virginias only win in that span. Also for Virginias’ regulars on the last day, Hampton Roads golfers Roger Newsom (Virginia Beach) and Seth Norman (Norfolk) scored victories. In his debut appearance in the matches, the 22-year-old Norman was a part of a team-leading three points for Virginias.
Carolinas’ got off to a strong start among the regulars, with Brent Roof (Columbia, S.C.) and Brad Williams (Gaffney, S.C.) each scoring victories.
Virginias’ seniors continued to shine after taking opening-round afternoon foursome encounters. In last day singles, Virginias won three of the first four matches, with Glenn Mullian (Richmond, Va.), Harold Payne (Hurricane, W.Va.) and Pat Tallent (Vienna, Va.) each scoring victories. For Carolinas, Wayne Rogers (Easley, S.C.) posted the team’s win in that early stretch.
Later, Ron Carpenter (Creedmoor, N.C.) and Don Detweiler (Raleigh, N.C.) collected wins for Carolinas in matches five and six, respectively. But Virginias claimed the last two matches, with Richmond’s Vinny Giles earning a halved, before fellow central Virginian Tim Kelley (Ashland, Va.) posted a closing victory. Mullian and Payne led Virginias over the two days in seniors’ encounters by recording two-and-a-half points apiece.
Carolinas leads the all-time series 47-17-1, but only owns a slim lead of 5-4-0 in the last nine meetings dating back to 2002.

final day singles matches. A victory in each match
scores one point in the
Ryder Cup-style format, and if a match goes 18
holes without a decision, one-half point is awarded to
each side.
