Lucky 7 for Mass. at Tri State Matches
East Providence, RI (Oct. 8, 2010) — For a record seventh consecutive year, a 12-man team from Massachusetts was simply dominating en route to capturing the Tri-State Team Match title. This year's event was held at Metacomet Country Club.
Team Massachusetts earned 72 points — including 51 points during Friday's singles matches — to best Rhode Island (51½) and Connecticut (38½ points).
As a result of their performance this week, Massachusetts becomes the only state to have claimed seven straight titles since the event's inception in 1928. The Bay State has won this prestigious title dating back to 2004. In total, Massachusetts has won 28 titles.
On this day, the team faced off against mid-amateur and senior amateur players from Rhode Island and Connecticut and came through with impressive performances from the entire squad.
Leading the way during the singles matches on Friday was Doug Clapp (Old Sandwich GC), who earned a maximum 6 points against Bill Hermanson (CT) and Ben Tuthill (RI).
Also posting strong individual performances were Brian Higgins (Franklin CC), Daniel Falcucci (Cyprian Keyes GC) and Ryan Riley (Norton CC) with 5½ points. Senior Paul Murphy (Charles River CC) collected 5 points, while Frank Vana, Jr. (Marlborough CC) and Jordan Burke (Needham GC) each finished with 4½ points.
Friday's performance was much needed as Massachusetts trailed the host state of Rhode Island by ½ points following the foursome matches on Thursday.
