2005 Florida Match Play Champion
UNIVERSITY PARK, FL (August 7, 2005) -- Kelly Gosse defeated Thomas Murray in the final match to win the Florida State Match Play Championship at the University Park Country Club in University Park on August 4-7.
Gosse, of Iverness, continued his winning streak beating Murray, of Orange Park, 3 and 1 in the finals. In the first round of match play, Gosse faced Michael Myles, of Key Biscayne, defeating him 3 and 2. In the round of 16 Gosse then faced Mark Leetzow, of Sarasota, winning that match in 19 holes. In the quarterfinals Gosse defeated Brandon Smith, from Lake Worth, 2 and 1. Gosse faced Lee Booker, of Naples, in the semifinals and won that match 2 up. The finals matched Gosse and Murray to determine the 2005 Match Play Champion. Murray knocked out Gosse in the round of 16 in the 2004 Match Play Championship. Gosse sealed the Championship on the 17th hole of play to win the final match 3 and 1.
In the first flight, Jimmy Jones, of Tampa, defeated Brian Schmidt, from Sarasota, 5 and 3 to win that flight. David Esch, from Orlando, won the second flight over Jose Novo, of Miami, in 19 holes. Peter Schrum, of Land O’Lakes, defeated Morgan Bayes, from Homestead, 6 and 5 to win the third flight. David Bird, from Valrico, won the fourth flight 2 and 1, defeating Donald Cain, from Sarasota.
All non-exempt competitors played an 18-hole stroke play seeding round on Thursday, August 4 to determine their flights. The field of 96 players made up five flights, a Championship flight of 32 players and four additional flights of 16 players. A winner was decided in each of the five flights with the Match Play Champion from the flight of 32
