Texas North Amateur: Moon wins by 5 in the Heat
CARROLLTON, TX (August 8, 2010)--Surviving the heat was the theme of the week at the North Amateur Championship presented by Cool Clubs. The Honors Golf Club of Dallas hosted the championship and presented players with a great opportunity to shoot low scores. Besides the triple digit temperatures, players faced near perfect scoring conditions throughout the week. In the end, Alex Moon took full advantage of the opportunity and cruised to a five shot victory.

Alex Moon, of Dallas, had a 3 shot lead after two days and wasted little time in taking control in the final round. With a birdie on the first hole, Moon showed his closest competitors that they would have to go low to catch him. Moon, a member of the University of Texas golf team, put on a show on the front nine with 6 birdies and just a lone bogey. Moon birdied 5 out of 6 holes during one stretch to put the championship out of reach. Moon matched the tournament low with a final round of 66 and finished at a very impressive 14 under par for the week. Alex Moon has had great success in TGA championships recently, adding this win to his 2008 West Texas Amateur title.

Nobody played better over the last two days than Paul McConnell, but he dug himself too big of a hole after the first round. Using his final round of 67 to go with his second round 66, McConnell vaulted up the leader board into second place. McConnell, of Garland, made 7 birdies and 2 bogeys in his final round to finish at 9 under par for three rounds. Jeff Dick played very consistently all week, but could not keep up with the blistering pace and settled for third. Jeff Dick shot rounds of 69-69-70 to finish at 8 under par. Jeff Dick made the final round eventful with 8 birdies, 4 bogeys, and a double bogey.

Format is scheduled for 54 holes of stroke play. The winner and runner-up of the 2010 North Amateur will receive an automatic exemption (if age eligible) into the 2010 State Mid-Amateur scheduled for September 17-19 at Boot Ranch GC in Fredericksburg. The top three finishers will receive an automatic exemption into the next year’s Texas Amateur Championship.
