U.S. Senior Open: Amateur Jackson two off the pace

SAMMAMISH, WASH., (July 29, 2010) -- Twenty eight amateurs teed off in the USGA Senior Open today at Sahalle Country Club in Sammamish Washington today. Tim Jackson from Germantown, Tennessee is one of them and he sits just two shots in back of the leader Bruce Vaughn. Jackson played a clean front nine with birdies on the par-3 fifth hole and the par-4 seventh. He rebounded from a bogey on the par-4 16th hole with a birdie on the 220-yard par-3 17th.

Casey Boyns, the caddie from Pebble Beach, and Rich Hudson are in good company at 29th place with names like Sutton, Sluman, Tway, and Irwin.

ABOUT THE U.S. Senior Open

The U.S. Senior Open is one of 14 national championships conducted by the USGA. Open to amateurs and professionals who have reached their 50th birthday as of the first day of the championship.

The Senior Open was first played in 1980 with a purse of, get this, just $100,000. Roberto Vincenzo of Argentina was the inaugural champion (winning $20,000), and Arnold Palmer was a popular winner the following year in 1981 at Oakland Hills.
