SARATOGA SPRINGS, Utah (May 28, 2010) -- Todd Barker birdied the first hole and never trailed in defeating Bill Pizza 5 and 4 for the UGA Senior Match Play title at Talons Cove at Saratoga Springs Friday. It was the second straight year that Pizza has advanced to the finals. Last year he lost to Ben Maddox.
It was Barker’s first UGA senior championship. The 56-year old Barker has probably won more tournaments than any other active amateur golfer in Utah and he was pleased to win this title. During the championship match he carded five birdies and one bogey for a four under par score after 14 holes.
Enroute to the finals he defeated James Burckle, 5 and 4, and was one under par; Paul Cannon, 4 and 3, and had seven birdies and four bogeys; Ruben Escobedo, 2 and 1, and was one over par; Steve Borget, 2 and 1, and was two under par.
Last years Super Senior champion, 76-year-old Dick Peacock, successfully defended his title, but he had to come from behind to overcome the strong challenge of Dennis Wood. Wood won the first two holes to put Peacock on notice, but Peacock caught him on the sixth hole and at the turn held a two hole margin of his own. On the back nine they tied the first five holes and Peacock went three-up with three to play when he birdied the 15th hole. Wood extended it a hole with a birdie on 16, but when they both parred 17 the match was over.
By virtue of being the defending champion Peacock got a first round bye, and then defeated Larry Reid, 1-up, Rich Gibbons, 2 and 1, and Dennis Wood in the final.
In the Net Division Dan Riddle gained a 4 and 3 victory over Kerry Coop. Riddle was the 13th seed after the qualifying round and then he defeated Gregg Bambo, 3 and 1; Gus Stribakos in 20 holes; medalist Bret Hancock 2-up; and Coop in the finals.
It was an outstanding golf tournament and the UGA was especially pleased with the extra special treatment extended by Talons Cove Golf Course and its staff.
