RHODES, Iowa (May 8, 2010) -- One of the closest matches in the history of the Iowa Cup competition completed today at The Harvester Golf Club. The Iowa Golf Association Amateur team, trailing by one point heading into the singles matches, managed 11 of the 20 available points to earn a 20 1/2 to 19 1/2 victory.
Longtime amateurgolf.com member Mike McCoy and his son Nate both won singles matches against their professional opponents on Saturday, the elder Mike in short order - 4&3 over Josh Carter of Bettendorf. That, no doubt, gave him enough time to provide moral support for his son Nate, who was playing in the group behind him against Ryan McClintock, who he defeated on the final hole.
Dr. Bob Gitchell of Ames is the Honorary Captain of the IGA Amateur squad and Director of Golf at Hyperion Field Club Ross deBuhr is the Honorary Captain of the Iowa PGA. The annual matches pit twenty of the best Iowa Golf Association Amateurs against twenty of the best Iowa PGA Professionals.
