ALAMEDA, Calif. (April 24, 2010) -- George Gandranata fired 5 under 67 Saturday to take a one stroke lead into the final round of the 83rd Alameda Commuters Championship. But Gandranata should be anything but comfortable at the top of the leaderboard -- he is trailed by 4-time Alameda Commuters champion Rick Reinsberg, who fired a 6 under par 65 to get right into the thick of things heading into Sunday.
Once again, firm, fast greens and tucked pins greeted the players on a wonderful spring day. Along with Gandranta's 67 and Reinsberg's 65, 36-hole co-leader Scott Olds fired 70 to stand alone in 3rd place at 207, grabbing a spot in the final pairing.
Carlos Briones of San Lorenzo posted 69 to hold the 4th spot at 209.
Briones, played an up and down round that included a double bogey 6 at the 12th. He will play in the second to last group with Patrick Grimes (72, 210) and Kevin Wentworth who played himself back into the tournament (69, 210).
In Senior action, defending champion Jim Knoll fired 67 to take a one stroke lead over Rob Adolph (68) and NorCal standout, Gary Vanier (69).
Alameda's Mark Merrigan fired 34 going out, but came in 42 to fall back to the middle of the pack with a 76.
The big question of the Senior tournament was: Where's Bobby? 6-Time Commuters Champion Bob Blomberg was rushed to the hospital to have emergency surgery prior to the tournament and had to withdraw. For many contestants, the Commuters isn't the Commuters, without Bob Blomberg.

ABOUT THE Alameda Commuters
What's in a name? In the case of the Alameda
Commuters Championship, the logo of the
almost 100
year old tournament would be a dead
giveaway. It's
a steam ferry, which was the only way to
"commute"
to San Francisco from the East Bay before the
Bay
Bridge was built. Started as an informal event
-- the
original first prize was a bag of nails -- the
tournament has grown into one of the top
independent events in California.
A
dedicated tournament committee prides itself
on
running the two weekend, 72-hole competition
as if
it were a PGA Tour event. Two of the best
public
courses at the city-owned Chuck Corica Golf
Complex
are prepared with care. Slick greens, Sunday
pins,
and even that rarity in amateur golf –
spectators are
all part of the fun. The roped-off scoreboard is
a
particular area of pride for the "green jackets"
who
were wearing dark green blazers before they
were
made popular by another tournament you
might be
aware of in Augusta Georgia. The 250 player
championship division is cut to 50 and ties for
the
second weekend, at which time the 36-hole
senior
division tees off to join them.
