CAPE CHARLES, VA (April 18, 2010)--The 14-golfer Virginia team posted a final-day 12-point win (27-15) in singles action against their West Virginia counterparts to register a 19-point victory (51½-32½) as the 27th Virginia-West Virginia Team Matches concluded today at Bay Creek Resort & Club’s Nicklaus Course.

Owners of a seven-point advantage entering Sunday’s concluding day of matches, Virginia’s regulars provided the difference, taking seven of the eight singles’ encounters, which included three shutouts to outscore their opponents by 15 points (19½-4½). West Virginia’s seniors and super seniors were three-point victors (10½-7½), but it wasn’t enough to offset Virginia’s huge advantage in the regular division.

Virginia, captained by VSGA president Richard Wight of Virginia Beach, Va., has now claimed 15 of the past 17 meetings in the matches. The team avenged last year’s loss and retained the Ye Ole Feudin’ Stick. Virginia leads the all-time series between the two teams, 22-4-1.

On the regulars’ side for Virginia, Buck Brittain (Tazewell, Va.), Jon Hurst (Fredericksburg, Va.) and Nick Biesecker of Staunton, Va., (pictured right) posted final-day three-point blankings to pace Virginia’s domination in the division on the last day. Additionally, northern Virginians Jeff Long (Centreville, Va.), Dan Hosek (Alexandria, Va.) and Jimmy Delp (Arlington, Va.) scored wins and two and a half points. Reigning VSGA golfer of the year Scott Shingler (Haymarket, Va.) notched a victory and two points to post a team-leading eight points over the weekend play. For West Virginia, Tim Fisher (Statts Mills, W.Va.) recorded a win and two points for the team’s only victory among the regulars.

In seniors’ matches, Bobby Bleiler of Suffolk, Va., (three-point shutout) and Richmond’s Glenn Mullian (two and a half points) scored final-day victories for Virginia. Contributing wins and two and a half points for West Virginia on the seniors’ side were Steve Fox (Huntington, W.Va.) and Jim Carpenter (Martinsburg, W.Va.). Super senior Charles Persinger (Hurricane. W.Va.) notched a three-point shutout, while Jack Forbes (Morgantown, W.Va.) added two points.
