Santa Cruz, Calif. - Golfers in the bay area are already welcoming the thought of the 64th Western Intercollegiate Golf Tournament slated for the world-famed Pasatiempo Golf Club (Santa Cruz, Calif.) on April 17-18, 2010. Players, coaches, community and business leaders, and avid golf enthusiasts anticipate a highly competitive men’s golf tournament between the 11 teams set to compete at this spectacular West Coast venue in mid-April. One of The Western’s more memorable moments dates back to 1996, when Arron Oberholser (SJSU) overtook Tiger Woods (Stanford University) on the final four holes to claim individual honors.

Proudly hosted by the San Jose State Spartan Men’s Golf, this 54-hole tournament will definitely make way for strong and proven play. It’s a fact, Pasatiempo’s MacKenzie-designed tract (ranked amongst the best by GolfWeek, Golf Digest, Golf Magazine and Zagat Survey) will require each team to “bring their best game” and put it to good use starting with Friday’s (April 16, 2010) College-Am Practice Round through final round competition on Sunday.

“The Western Intercollegiate is one of the longest running tournaments in college golf and it’s played on one of the top courses in the United States,” says San Jose State Coach John Kennaday. “We’re able to attract nationally-ranked teams from across the country. Historically, great teams have come to the Western for many, many years. We can draw teams from New England, the Southeast and Midwest, schools in the Sun Belt and all the way to Hawaii.”

Accomplished players who’ve claimed title to The Western include Bobby Clampett, Peter Jacobson, Mark Lye, Johnny Miller, Arron Oberholser, Mark O’Meara, Ken Venturi, and Duffy Waldorf. “There is an incredible list of past Western champions,” stated Kennaday. “It takes a special game to win on an Alister MacKenzie golf course and that has always been the case.” Other standout players whose formative years include competing in The Western at Pasatiempo are Al Geiberger, John Lotz, Roger Maltbie, Bob Rosburg, Dave Stockton, Tom Watson, and Tiger Woods.

1964 U.S. Open Champion, SJSU Alumnus and Western Intercollegiate ’51 and ’53 medalist Ken Venturi recalls “Some of my fondest collegiate memories were when I was competing in The Western at Pasatiempo. I’m happy to know it still remains a premier west coast event for collegiate players and their teammates.”

Mark your calendar now for The Western at Pasatiempo, where spectators are welcome Saturday April 17 and Sunday April 18, and avid amateur golfers are invited to tee it up in the College-Am on Friday, April 16.
