ANDERSON HANGS ON FOR PRE-SENIOR TITLE

John Anderson of Sioux Falls captured his third Pre-Senior Championship on Sunday afternoon, finishing with a 7-under-par 137 total at Lakeview Golf Course in Mitchell.

Anderson, who won titles in 1997 and 1999, edged Jim Entwisle of Huron by one shot. Entwisle had a chance to tie and force extra holes, but his five-foot birdie attempt on the final hole rimmed out.

Anderson opened with a 6-under 66 on Saturday, good enough for a one-stroke lead over Flandreau's Derek Burshiem. Entwisle started Sunday's round four back. Two early birdies pushed Anderson's lead to four as a pair of bogeys derailed Burshiem's hopes.

Birdies on Nos. 9 and 11 got Entwisle within four, before he closed the gap to a single shot with an eagle on the 330-yard 13th. Faced with a 70-yard pitch, Entwisle holed the shot, then benefited further when Anderson three-putted for his lone bogey of the tournament. Entwisle drew even with a birdie on the par-5 15th. After Anderson and Entwisle each parred 16, Anderson regained the advantage when Entwisle failed to get up-and-down from a bunker on the par-3 17th.

Burshiem finished third, while Pat Lockwood of Brookings was fourth and Glen Herrick of Sioux Falls finished fifth in the first flight.

Flight winners were: Eric Smith, Sioux Falls, second flight (141); Larry Green, Madison, third flight (149); Jay Christenson, Watertown, fourth flight (151); Dave Brekke, Wagner, fifth flight (161); Dave Gibson, Brookings, sixth flight (160); Mike Wright, Sioux Falls, seventh flight (171); and Bob Faehn, Watertown, eighth flight (171).
