VENICE, FL (January 19, 2010)--James Weick, of Fort Lauderdale, captured the Winter Series event run by the Florida State Golf Association at Sarasota National in Venice, January 18-19. He was joined in the winner’s circle by Kim Schwencke, of Temple Terrace and Robert Martin, of Fort Lauderdale who won the Senior and Super Senior divisions respectively.
James Weick, of Fort Lauderdale, went wire-to-wire in the Regular Division to win by one stroke. After carding an even par 72 in the first round, Weick, held it together in the final round carding a 76 which was highlighted by his par save on the last hole to secure the victory by one. In the first three Winter Series events of the 2009-2010 season, Weick has two victories and a second place finish. Howard Logan, of Simpsonville, KY, finished in second place with a tournament total of 149. Jon Tingley, of Osprey, grabbed third place honors with rounds of 78-73 for a tournament total of 151.
Kim Schwencke, of Temple Terrace, came from a two stroke deficit in the Senior Division to win by one stroke. Schwencke followed his first round 72 with a one over par 73, to claim first place honors. With this victory Schwencke booked his ticket to the Senior Amateur Championship at Southern Hills Plantation. Tying for second place were Stephen Maddox, of Lakeland, and Pat Vincelli, of Stuart with a tournament total of 146.
Robert Martin, of Fort Lauderdale, captured the Super Senior Division in a three hole play-off. Martin carded a five over par 77 in the first round and followed that by shooting his age with an even par 72 in the final round to force a play-off with Fred Allen, of North Venice who fired rounds of 80-69. Martin secured the victory by making a six foot birdie putt on the third play-off hole. With this victory Martin also booked his ticket to the Senior Amateur Championship at Southern Hills Plantation. This was the third play-off in a row to decide the Champion of the Super Senior division. Jerry Jackson, of Sarasota, finished in third place with a tournament total of 150.
The Winter Series events include eight competitions, six individual events and two four-ball events. There are three age divisions, Mid-Senior (40-54), Senior (55-64) and Super Senior (65 & over). The Winter Series is a great opportunity for golfers to compete in competitive events that normally may not because they do not live in Florida year round.
