Georgia Team: Dalton G&CC Sets Record
STATHAM, GA (November 1, 2009)--Dalton Golf and Country Club posted scores of 66, 70 and 71 in the individual stroke play round to set a new scoring record of 345 and win its second Georgia Team Championship in three years. Dalton G&CC finished at 15-under par, nine shots ahead of Suwanee’s Laurel Springs Golf Club and St. Ives Country Club of Duluth, who each posted 354 to tie for the runner-up position.

“We had a really strong team this year,” Calhoun’s Greg Brock, a member of the Dalton G&CC team, explained. “Everyone on the team contributed in a big way.”

“It just doesn’t matter what the circumstances are,” said Dalton’s David Noll Jr. “It’s great to find a way to win.”

Cartersville Country Club placed fourth overall at 4-under 356. Rivermont Golf and Country Club of Johns Creek finished alone in fifth at 2-under 358. In sixth place, at 359, was Reynolds Plantation of Greensboro. Two teams tied for seventh at even-par 360 – they were Cherokee Town and Country of Atlanta and Dacula’s Hamilton Mill Golf Club. Cuscowilla on Lake Oconee, located in Eatonton, finished ninth overall with a team total of 361. Rounding out the top ten and finishing with a 2-over 362 was Indian Hills Country Club of Marietta.

In the final round, which featured best-three-of-four stroke play scoring, Dalton Golf and Country Club dominated the field, firing three of their four rounds under par. Noll, coming off a recent victory at the Atlanta Amateur Match Play Championship, posted the low score of the individual round with a 66. Beau Bray of Ringgold tallied a two-under-par 70 and Greg Brock turned in a 71. Dalton’s Brian Owens posted a 77, which did not contribute toward the team’s total.

Besides Noll, only three other players carded rounds in the 60s. Kennesaw’s Chris Hall helped propel Cartersville Country Club up the leader board with a five-under 67 while John Smith of Duluth, representing St. Ives Country Club, and Brent Sizemore of Calhoun, playing for Stonebridge Golf Club, each posted a three-under 69.

The Georgia Club, which hosted the Team Championship for the fifth-consecutive year, played to approximately 6,919 yards and a par of 72. Teams played the Red and Black nines.

GSGA began awarding the Georgia Team Championship to Member Clubs in 1927, recognizing the club with the two members posting the lowest 36-hole scores in the Georgia Amateur Championship. In the mid-1980s, a separate competition began with clubs playing one another in matches at an agreed-upon site. Since 1993, the championship has been played in its current format at a time and place determined by the GSGA. Entries were open to four-man teams of male amateur golfers who are Georgia residents and selected by their GSGA member club. The field was open to 30 teams on a first come, first serve basis.

Founded in 1916, the Georgia State Golf Association (GSGA) received its official charter on June 24, 1924. Since that date, the GSGA has grown to one of the largest state amateur golf associations in the country, with over 355 member clubs and 85,000 individual members. With a mission to promote and preserve amateur golf in the state of Georgia, GSGA offers a computerized handicapping service, course rating and measuring, and annually conducts a full schedule of statewide competitions for men and women of all age groups. Other services include a summer-long junior sectional program, award-winning Golf Georgia magazine, membership recognition and rewards programs and a charitable foundation administering two college scholarship programs.
