BANDON, OR, (August 2, 2005) -- Recently crowned U.S. Amateur Public Links champion Clay
Ogden of West Point, Utah, continued his sizzling summer as he fired a 3-under-par
68 on the Pacific Dunes course at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort to take a one-shot
lead after the first round of the 39th Pacific Coast Amateur Championship.
On a sunny, windswept day that made good scores in the mid-morning and afternoon
scarce, the 20-year-old Ogden -- a BYU student who defeated Michelle Wie en
route to winning the U.S. Publinks earlier this summer -- had four birdies and
only one bogey over the Tom Doak-designed layout, despite starting at an unfavorable
time with regards to the weather.
Ogden is two shots in front of two Californians, Kevin Chappell of Fresno and
Louie Bishop of Murrieta, who took advantage of their early tees, and Jonathan
Moore of Vancouver, Wash., who was in one of the last groups. Each fired rounds
of 2-under-par 69. Shane Prante of Olympia, Wash., and Ryan Keeney of Redmond,
Wash., were the only others under par after shooting 1-under-par 70. Seven golfers
matched par with 71s and another seven shot 72. NCGA standout Scott Hardy of
Pleasant Hill finished with a 72, while Will Johnson of San Francisco and Elliott
Wainwright of Hillsborough carded respective 73s.
The second round will be played tomorrow over the Bandon Dunes Golf Course.
The third round Thursday will be played at Pacific Dunes and Friday’s
final round will return to Bandon Dunes GC.
Ogden’s score was all the more impressive because he began his round
at 9 a.m. on the first tee. By the time he got to the back nine, he was facing
30 mph winds, but he birdied the 15th and 16th holes to go 4 under par, only
to make bogey 4 on the 203-yard 17th. He finished with a par 5 on the closing
hole to complete his 68.
The 19-year-old Chappell, a student at UCLA who was in the first group off
of No. 8 at 7:30 a.m., had three birdies and just one bogey on his round. Bishop,
20, a student at UC Davis, was in the second group off of No. 8 and began his
round with a bogey 5 . Then he then reeled off eight consecutive pars and finished
by making three birdies in his final eight holes to join Chappell at a shot
behind Ogden. Moore, a student at Oklahoma State, birdied his final three holes
to gain a share of second.
Defending Pacific Coast Amateur champion Michael Putnam of Tacoma, Wash., struggled
to a 4-over-par 75, while 2003 champion James Lepp of Abbottsford, British Columbia,
is in a large group at 1-over-par 72.
Southern Nevada Golf Association and British Columbia GA have a one-shot lead
after the first round of the Morse Cup Team Competition, held in conjunction
with the first two rounds of the championship. With the best two of three individual
scores counting for the team total, Southern Nevada and British Columbia each
totaled 1-under-par 143. They’re a shot in front of Alberta GA, which
finished at even par 144.
