OCALA, FL (October 4, 2009)--Meghan Stasi of Oakland Park, Fla., Laura Ladden of Coatesville, Pa., Mina Hardin of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Jennifer Lucas of Knoxville, Tenn., tied for medalist honors with 36-hole totals of 146, two over par, at the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship at the 6,173-yard, par-72 Golden Hills Golf and Turf Club.

Hardin, 49, was the only player to break 70 in stroke-play qualifying with a 3-under-par 69 on Sunday.

“I’m very pleased with my round, especially because I’m nursing an injury and haven’t been able to practice,” said Hardin, runner-up in this championship in 2002. “Today it was a little better. I feel normal.”

Hardin pulled a hip muscle while working out in a gym a few weeks ago. She made four birdies on Sunday on putts ranging from 6 to 15 feet to join the low scorers.

Stasi, 31, the 2006 and 2007 champion, shot her second straight 73 to tie for medalist honors. “I just had a feel for the course today and I was confident on the greens,” Stasi said. “Now, I’m just getting ready for match play.”

Ladden, a teacher, and Lucas, a salesperson, combine careers and motherhood while Lucas and Hardin are former professionals.

Ladden, 33, birdied the first two holes on her way to a 1-under-par 71 to join the other three players.

“It was a good start,” Ladden said. “I didn’t have a good warm-up, but I made a 15-foot birdie putt on the first hole and that kind of settled me down.”

Ladden hit a 4-iron to within 8 feet of the flagstick on the 378-yard, par-4 second hole and made the putt for her second straight birdie.

“My husband, Mike, my caddie, said after the second birdie that now we could focus on good golf and go as low as possible,” Ladden said.

She made one more birdie, at the seventh hole, and turned in 3-under-par 32, but made two bogeys on the back nine for 71.

Lucas was leading the field at one over par until she bogeyed the 353-yard, par-4 18th hole. After driving into a fairway bunker, she hit a poor shot and was left with 75 yards to the green. She hit a pitching wedge for her third shot.

“It was the best pitching wedge I’ve hit all week and I picked the wrong time to hit it flush,” Lucas said.

Her shot flew over the green and she nearly chipped in from the fringe, making a tap-in bogey to join the tie for medalist honors.

In Monday’s first round of match play, only Ladden’s opponent has been decided. She’ll face Rena Yun of Glendale, Calif.

With the low 64 scorers advancing to match play, 66 players were tied at 162 or better. A five-way playoff for the three remaining spots will be conducted at 8 a.m. Monday.

Seven champions besides Stasi were among those who made the cut, including defending champion Joan Higgins of Glendora, Calif. (148); 1998 champion Virginia Derby Grimes (148); 2003 champion Amber Marsh Elliot (151); 2002 champion Kathy Hartwiger (151); 1995, 1996, 2000 champion Ellen Port (155); 2004 champion Corey Weworski (160); and 1990 and 1997 champion Carol Semple Thompson (161).

The Women’s Mid-Amateur, for women amateurs age 25 and older, will conclude with a scheduled 18-hole final on Thursday. It is one of 13 national championships conducted by the United States Golf Association. Ten are strictly for amateurs.
