Cox Takes Palm Beach Senior By Seven
PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL (September 26, 2009)--Tim Cox used improved putting to win the Palm Beach County Senior Amateur Championship for the third time in the last eight years. The leader by four strokes after opening with 67, Cox birdied the first, third and fifth holes Saturday enroute to 70-137, winning by seven at Eastpointe Country Club.

“I usually don’t putt very well,” said Cox, 57, an attorney from Palm Beach Gardens, “but I putted well both days here,” with 10 birdies and three bogeys in 36 holes. “Plus, with the back problems I’ve been having, I’ve switched to playing a fade instead of a hook and that’s gone pretty well, too.”

Marc Rosenbaum of Hollywood, the two-time defending champion, was a distant second at 144 on a pair of 72s.

Cox’s previous County Senior victories were in 2002 and 2004. His next objective may be a record-equaling fourth title. Previous four-time winners were Bill Whitaker, in 1981, 1983-84 and 1986; and Clyde Gibson of Hobe Sound, who won in 1985, 1989, 1994 and 1998. Gibson has earned a record 23 Palm Beach County Golf Association events since 1985. He was inducted into the PBCGA Hall of Fame in 2003.

Net winners Saturday were Tom Fiocchi, Palm Beach Gardens, 50-64, 1 42, and Mel Hirsch, Palm Beach Gardens, 65-up, 135. There were 80 entries.

Next on the PBCGA tournament schedule: Oct. 2-4, Mid-Amateur Match Play, Jonathan’s Landing GC at Old Trail; and Oct. 17-18, Junior-Senior, Abacoa GC. For membership information and tournament entry, go to www.pbcga.org.
