Florida Mid-Senior: Olive Wins by 3

PALM HARBOR, FL (August 23, 2009)--Phil Olive posted a tournament total of 2-under par 211 to capture the Mid-Senior Championship at the Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club in Palm Harbor on August 21-23.

Phil Olive, from Estero, shot a final round even par 71 on the Copperhead Course to win the 2009 Championship by three strokes. After a first round 1-under par 70 on the par 71 Island Course, Olive trailed the leaders by one stroke. Olive then matched his first round score of 70 in the second round on the Copperhead Course to trail the leader by one with one round remaining. In the final round, Olive posted a solid even par round of 71 on the difficult Copperhead course to win the championship by three strokes. This victory adds to Olive’s Senior/Mid-Amateur Four Ball championship which he captured last year.

Buddy Alexander, of Gainesville finished alone in second place firing a tournament total 214. In the final round Alexander posted a 3-over par 74 on the Copperhead course to go with his first round 72 on the Island course and a 3-under par 68 in the second round on the Copperhead course. Richard Kerper, from Safety Harbor, tied for third place carding rounds of 71-74-71 to finish 3-over par 216 for the 54-hole event. Tim Hume, from Tampa, also tied for third carding rounds of 72-73-71 for a tournament total for 216. Hume who was recently selected to represent Florida in the USGA State Team held at The Country Club of St. Albans in St. Albans, Missouri has had a fantastic year winning the Mid-Amateur Stroke Play Championship and the Four-Ball Championship.

To be eligible for the Mid-Senior Championship, players must be 40 years of age or older. The Championship consists of 54 holes of stroke play cut to the low 70 plus ties after 36 holes. The first two rounds were played on the Copperhead and Island Courses with 67 players advancing with a two-round total of 155 and better to the final round on the Copperhead Course.
