BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WGEM) -- Former Quincy High standout and Illinois sophomore Luke Guthrie waited for the final nine holes to make his move during Thursday's final round of the Illinois Men's State Amateur in Bloomington.
Guthrie started the day five strokes behind Rockford's Brad Benjamin but finished three under par on the back-nine to capture the title.
Guthrie told the Bloomington Pantagraph, "I knew it was a long tournament. I had a really bad start. I was out of it and not really focused. I had to suck it up and get it in the house that day and regroup. That's what I did (shooting 73)."
Benjamin bogeyed the final hole denying his chance of forcing a playoff.
