Texas North Regional: Couture Dominates
2009 Texas North Regional Amateur champion
2009 Texas North Regional Amateur champion

ARLINGTON, TX (August 9, 2009)--There is simply no doubt who the best amateur golfer in the state is these days and all the players in the North Texas Amateur were reminded of who that person is this weekend. Tierra Verde Golf Club in Arlington hosted this year’s championship and held its own against the region’s top amateurs. The leaders got off to a blistering pace on the first day, but scores rose over the weekend thanks to a brisk wind that challenged the players. Rob Couture however, could not be stopped and cruised to a five shot victory.

Rob Couture started the day tied with Alex Moon, but it did not take him long to get a comfortable lead. Couture birdied the second and third holes and had a four shot lead by the time he made the turn. Couture cruised home from there with a bogey free round. He added a birdie on the 17th hole to get to ten under par for the week. Rob Couture has dominated Texas Golf Association championships over the past few years. Including this victory, Couture has now won five times in the last two years alone. With his victory Couture also became the North Player of the Year for the second time in the last three years. He also guaranteed himself a spot on the North Shootout Team later this year.

Stetson McMillan and Alex Moon played consistently all week and tied for second place at five under par. Moon tried to rally late with birdies on the 13th and 14th holes, but his rally was cut short after missing birdie putts on the next two holes. This finish added to Moon’s victory at the West Texas Amateur gives him good momentum going into his golf season at the University of Texas. McMillan got off to a hot start Sunday, but could not keep up with Couture’s pace and finished with an even par round of 72. This was McMillan’s second consecutive second place finish in a TGA championship.

Jared Johnson tied the best round of the championship with a six under par 66. Johnson, a member of the Tyler Junior College Golf Team, vaulted all the way into a tie for fourth place. Michael McKinley joined Johnson at four under par for the week. McKinley was very solid all week with rounds of 70-70-72.

The North Amateur was the final regional championship of the 2009 season. Many of the players in the field will be tuning up their games for the State Mid-Amateur in September. There the field will have their eye on the defending champion, none other than Rob Couture.
