SIOUX FALLS, SD (July 17, 2005) -- Shannon Johnson of Sioux Falls won her third consecutive Women's Stroke Play Championship on Sunday afternoon at Minnehaha Country Club in Sioux Falls.
Johnson, who will be a senior at Indiana University, fired a final-round 1-over-par 74 to finish the 54-hole event at 8-over-par 227. Julie Jansa and Karla Murra, both of Sioux Falls, tied for second eight strokes back. Lisa Meritt of Sioux Falls was fourth (238) and 2005 Hall of Fame inductee Peggy Kirby of Sioux Falls was fifth (239).
Johnson started the day with a two-shot lead over Jansa and Murra, but Murra, who will be a junior at the University of Iowa, drew even with a par on the 472-yard fifth. Johnson and Murra stayed tied until Johnson parred the 366-yard ninth to make the turn one stroke ahead. Johnson pushed the advantage to two with a par on the 153-yard 10th. The lead grew to three when Johnson birdied the 497-yard 12th and her advantage steadily grew the rest of the afternoon.
Patty Coddington of Sioux Falls defended her Pre-Senior Championship crown with a final-round 83 for a 244 total. Colette Quam of Aberdeen was second (251) and Sheryl Ward of Watertown was third (270).
Anne Borgmann of Sioux Falls overcame an 11-stroke deficit after 36 holes to win her 12th Senior Championship. Borgmann, a 1995 Hall of Fame inductee, shot a final-round 79 for a 261 total and a four-shot win over second-round leader Carla Landreth of Britton. Karen Rohde of Brandon was third at 273.
Mikala Henzlik of Rapid City won the First Flight of the Championship Division with a 266 total. Lois Quam of Huron was the Pre-Senior First Flight champion (293) and Pam Larsen of Dell Rapids was the Senior First Flight winner (305).
