AUBURN, ME (July 10, 2009)--The last time Jesse Speirs played in a championship at Martindale Country Club in Auburn, he was 12 years old and playing in the match play finals of the Maine Junior Championship in the 12 and under division.

He lost on the 17th hole.

Speirs redeemed that loss and then some on Friday as he coasted to a four-shot victory over defending champion Ryan Gay, with the only three-day under par total in the Maine Amateur Championship. With par for the event at 213, Speirs finished at three-under after Friday's even par round.

In true championship fashion, Speirs dedicated the trophy to Tom Kimball, the MSGA Junior Director who died of heart failure at the age of 57 in March. He also thanked his family for all they'd done for his golf career, and said he will long remember the lessons learned from his Maine golf experiences.

It was doubtful the event was going to be able to be played as a traditional 54-hole event after Wednesday's rains forced a postponement of the second round. But thanks to the wonderful dedication of Martindale superintendent Robbie Brown and his crew, the tournament not only finished, but the final day saw the Martindale greens stimping at their regular tournament speed of 11+. The entire staff at Martindale is to be commended for their stellar performance in preparing their course for this most prestigious of Maine amatuer tournaments.

Thank you for your continued interest in Maine golf. Please find below complete final round results...
