Brandon Park Captures Florida Junior
WEST PALM BEACH, FL (July 9, 2009)--Brandon Park captures the 55th Florida State Boys Junior Championship as Evan Byrd claimed the junior division title at Bear Lakes Country Club on July 7-9.

In the 16-18 age division, Brandon Park, of Weston, posted a tournament total of 1-over par 217 to win the 2009 Boys Junior Championship. After a first round 4-over par 76 on the par 72 Links course, Park trailed the leaders by 5 heading into the second round. Park cut into the lead with the low round of the tournament in the second round on the Lakes course, firing a 3 under par 69 to trail Monnerville by one stroke heading into the final round. In the final round, Park started with birdies on holes 1, 3, 6, 8 and 9 to card a 3 under par 33 on the front nine and a two stroke advantage. “It was fun out there trading shots with James, we were both hitting the ball great and making a lot of birdies” said Park. On the back, Park held it together with a 3-over par 39. Park’s final round of even par 72 on the Lakes course secured his victory by two strokes. “This win is great,” said Park. “This is one of my last junior tournaments so it’s nice to close it out with my biggest win of my career.” Park will be playing at Seton Hall University in the fall. James Monnerville, of Vero Beach, tied for second place carding rounds of 71-73-75 to finish 3-over par 219 for the 54-hole event. J D Tomlinson, of Gainesville, also tied for second place firing a two under par 70 in the final round on the Lakes course to post a three round total of 219.

In the 13-15 age division, Evan Byrd, of Ocala, secured the title recording a tournament total of 1-under par 215. After posting rounds of 72-72 the first two days, Byrd trailed by two strokes heading into the final round. In the final round, Byrd made the turn at 2-under par 34 with birdies on the holes 1, 6 and 9 for a one stroke lead over Shaw. On the back nine, Byrd birdied hole 14 and held it together on the last few holes for the win. “The courses were unbelievable,” said Byrd. “It was a real challenge to hold it together for all three rounds.” “I am shocked,” said Byrd. “This is the biggest win of my career, and one I will never forget.” Sawyer Shaw, of West Palm Beach, finished in second place with a final round 74. Combined with his first two rounds of 72-70, Shaw finished with a 216 total and one shot behind Byrd. Jack Hernandez, of Fort Myers, placed third at 223.

More than 300 entries were filed for the 2009 Championship. Competitors first attempted to qualify for the Championship at one of six sites across the state in 18 holes of stroke play. The Championship field features 126 of the top male amateur golfers in the 16-18 age division and 42 top juniors in the 13-15 age division. In the Championship, competitors will play 18 holes on the (Lakes/Links) course with the final 18 holes at Bear Lakes Country Club (Lakes course).

To enter, participants must be between the ages of 13-18 as of July 7 and not attending college. Also, the juniors must have a handicap index no higher than 17.4.
