Michigan (GAM) Women's Amateur Championship

ANN ARBOR, MI (July 15, 2005) -– There were many firsts that happened at the 89th Michigan Women’s Amateur Championship. It was the first time the Golf Association of Michigan conducted the championship, two former Miss Golf’s faced off in the finals, and both finalists were playing in their first ever Michigan Women’s Amateur Championship. 2005 Champion, Mandi McConnell (Grand Blanc) defeated Laura Bavaird (Grosse Ile) 6 & 5 in the weather delayed final match at Radrick Farms Golf Course. Bavaird went 20 holes to finish the Hall of Famer, Joan Garety for her run for a third title in the morning semifinal match. “Joan Garety took every good shot I had in me. The final match just wore on me mentally.” After a steamy week of grueling golf, MSU’s McConnell was relieved “I wanted to play the least amount of holes possible to win,” she said. As champion, she gets her name on the Michigan Women’s Amateur trophy. “It’s a great place to have your name. I was talking to coach (MSU’s Coach - Stacy Slobodink-Stoll) and she told me that my name would be there always.” During the Michigan Women’s Senior Amateur Championship, also played at Radrick Farms Golf Course this week, Maureen Whitehead (Osseo) defeated Sophia Kang (Bloomfield Hills) 4 & 3. “It was a grind, hot and sticky out there. It was something I really wanted to do,” Whitehead said. “I played here in 1992 and at 5,600 yards the course is setup perfectly for me. I wanted to win and I did.” ANN ARBOR (AP) - Results for Friday’s round of match play at the 89th Michigan Women’s Amateur Championship conducted by the Golf Association of Michigan at Radrick Farms Golf Course [6,080, Par 72]: Semifinal Matches (Morning) Results: Laura Bavaird def.
