WINTERGREEN, VA (June 7, 2009)--The Stoney Creek Golf Club showed its mountain strength today as the entire field played in over par. While the players raved about course conditions the course yielded few birdies throughout the tournament.

It all started again with the first tee shot for Matt Schovee. Today Matt started his round with a hooked tee shot into the lake; however, he crafted an up and down from 80 yards for a par on the opening hole. The rising sophomore carded a one over par 73 for a total of one under total of 215. All week the opening tee shot has been his nemesis and all week he has kept his composure with a birdie on the second hole. “Today I struggled with my tee shot – it was horrible. All week I chipped and putted beautifully. My shortgame really kept me in it all week."

Chris Olson a rising junior at Christopher Newport University applied the pressure on Schovee with a series of birdies late on the front nine and early into the back nine. He closed the gap to 3 shots standing on the 12th tee box; however Schovee made a critical birdie on Virginia’s longest par 4, 505 yards. Runner up Chris Olson finished with a three over par 75 for a total of 222.

Coming in third place was Coastal Carolina’s Andrew Kegarise with a score of 225. Finishing g forth place was Christopher Newport’s Joseph Suarez with a score of 229. Rounding out the top 5 was Bridgewater College’s John Phillips with final score of 231.

In the end Matt Shovee’s play was absolutely methodical, carefully constructed and highly well executed. He outplayed the entire field to his first Wintergreen National Amateur Championship. Look out college golf this rising sophomore is a mile high versus his classmates.
