Michael Deo won his first New Jersey Amateur title

CHATHAM, NJ (June 4, 2009)--Thirty-two year old Michael Deo of High Bridge Hills claimed his first career NJSGA Amateur Championship, finishing with a four round total of 291 (three-over par) at the par 72, 6777 yard Fairmount Country Club in Chatham. Deo finished one stroke better than a hard-charging Mike Meisenzahl of Little Mill Country Club, who pressed Deo’s lead with efforts of one-over and even par in the third and fourth rounds respectively. Meisenzahl, twenty-one years of age from Medford and a student at James Madison University, finished two strokes ahead of defending Champion Tom Gramigna of Tavistock and Kyle Hartlaub of Canoe Brook.

Deo, a resident of Berkeley Heights, had been a four-time second place finisher in the NJSGA Amateur years (1997, 1999, 2005, and 2006). Strong, consistent play over the three days was Deo’s key to victory on the rain-softened Hal Purdy layout. Deo now possesses a ten-year exemption into the Amateur Championship and will hold the Edwin M. Wild Championship Trophy for the ensuing year.
