Virginia Women's Team Matches: Elizabeth Manor leads
NEWPORT NEWS, Virg. (Oct. 26, 2011) –– The six-golfer Elizabeth Manor Golf and Country Club team fired a first round score of 5-under-par 208 to lead stroke play qualifying today at the 65th Virginia State Golf Association Women’s State Team Matches at James River Country Club.

Elizabeth Manor, based in Portsmouth, Va., earned the top seed for match play in the championship flight, which begins on Thursday, Oct. 27. The better-ball aggregate of three twosomes comprising each six-player team was used to position teams in one of four flights. Team winners for each flight will be determined during two days of match play competition, scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 27-28.

In Wednesday’s opening round of match play, Elizabeth Manor will meet No. 4 seed and the event’s three-time defending event champions, Mount Vernon Country Club (231). Mount Vernon bested Elizabeth Manor for the title at last year’s event. Meanwhile, second-seeded The Country Club of Virginia (220) takes on three-seeded Bayville Golf Club (228).

The championship flight features teams that have traditionally performed very well in the matches. Elizabeth Manor collected three consecutive victories in the matches from 2002-04. CCV is a 10-time victor in the event, while Mount Vernon owns nine titles altogether, with five of their triumphs coming since 2000.

Top seeds in each of the remaining four flights are: central Virginia’s The Country Club at The Highlands in flight one, Chesapeake-based Greenbrier Country Club in flight two and The Williamsburg Club in flight three.

Golfers representing 16 VSGA member clubs throughout the commonwealth comprise the field, with four teams vying for the Nancy Hollenbeck Trophy in championship flight action.
