Sun Country Match Play: Putnam Wins Again

ALBUQUERQUE, NM (May 31, 2009)--The match between two locals, Brandon Putnam and Chandler Smith-Stetson, got underway at 7:30 a.m. this morning. Before things started many believed this would be a very good match considering some of the players Putnam and Smith-Stetson took out along the way. Nevertheless, it didn’t take long for two-time champion Putnam to get a hold of the match. After both players drove the ball down the middle of the fairway on number one Putnam was the only player able to make par. Although Smith-Stetson made several efforts to get back into the match he couldn’t take advantage of timely birdie putts. He had chances on the 11th, 12th, and 13th yet the ball wouldn’t find the bottom of the cup. As a result, Putnam won the match 4 and 3 and captured his third match play championship title. Our champion had this to say about his victory:

“My goal coming into the weekend was to keep the ball in play off the tee. Although Sandia’s fairways are wide, if you manage to get off the fairways you can easily find trouble. I knew if I was able to get this part of the plan under control I would be able to find the putting surface. Once on the greens, I was committed to playing my own game and not concerning myself with my playing competitor’s situation. Over the years I’ve found that if you play somewhat boring golf that involves fairways and greens it can really weigh down on your opponent. It just so happened that I was lucky enough to make a bunch of birdies and pars to defeat all of my opponents. I am very pleased with the result and hope things keep going into the SCAGA Public Links Championship.”
