WEST PALM BEACH, FL (May 31, 2009)--Brandon Smith scored his second Palm Beach County Golf Association victory, the first on his own ball, when he won the 13th annual Tire Kingdom Stroke Play Championship on Sunday at Banyan Golf Club.

Two down at the start of the final round, and four behind after two holes, Smith, 27, of West Palm Beach, rallied to beat Tequesta teenager Brant Peaper by a stroke, 139 to 140, on final round scores of 71 and 74. Peaper led Smith after Saturday’s play, 66-68.

“I was playing well but getting frustrated with my putting because nothing was falling,” said Smith, who finally had a significant result on the green when he sank an 18 footer for birdie after hitting an 8-iron to the green at the par-3 16th hole.

It pulled Smith, an insurance agent, even with Peaper, who had birdied the 15th. Then Peaper bogeyed the 17th when he missed the green and both missed long birdie putts at the 18th.

The win “should give me a lot of confidence going into the summer season,” Smith added. “Mentally, I stayed in it, stayed focused, even though I was getting frustrated with my putting.”

Smith has been playing as an amateur on the Minor League Golf Tour in recent months “to knock the rust off my game and get ready for the summer. I usually don’t really get going until June or July.”

He earned his only PBCGA victory in 2005 at Abacoa Golf Club, the Senior-Junior with Dann Merrell, and his only MLGT win was in May, 2007, at Miami Shores Country Club. In 2005, Smith also won the prestigious Invitational de Avila in Tampa.

The son of Brian Peaper, head professional at the Lost Tree Club and recently elected vice president of the South Florida PGA Section, Brant was graduated from the Benjamin School last week and is headed for Indiana University on a golf scholarship.

The Stroke Play Championship had 102 entries. Next on the PBCGA schedule: the Public Links Championship Saturday and Sunday at PGA National. For membership information and tournament entry, go to www.pbcga.org.
