Twin Lakes Golf and Country Club, Federal Way, Wash. (July 14, 2005) -– Paige Mackenzie
of Yakima, Wash. and Taylor Leon of Dallas, Texas will meet in the
final match for the 104th PNGA Women’s Amateur Championship. Mackenzie was
challenged in her morning match by Blair Ressler of Bellingham, Wash.
as it took one playoff hole to finally get a victory. The left-handed
Ressler sank a 12 foot right-to-left bending, birdie putt on the
eighteenth hole and forced Mackenzie to sink a 10 foot putt for a playoff. On
the first playoff hole, a par 5, Mackenzie sealed the deal as she sank
a 12 foot eagle putt that was set up by a second shot 3-wood from over
210 yards. She concluded her day with a 5 up with 4 to play victory
over fellow University of Washington teammate Amy Wang of Kirkland, Wash.
in her afternoon match. Mackenzie will play Taylor Leon of Dallas, TX
in the 36 hole final. Leon defeated Jillian Ferrante of Battle Ground,
Wash. 4 up with 3 holes to play. Leon has displayed dominance by
defeating her opponents early in her matches. She has not had a match go
beyond the 16th hole. The 36 hole championship match should be
hard-fought and likely will go the distance.
In the 4th PNGA Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship, Lisa Smego of
Olympia, Wash. and Kareen Markle of Eagle, Idaho will meet in the championship
match. Smego, the defending champion, defeated Leslie Folsom of
Renton, Wash. 3 up with 2 to play. Markle defeated Tarie Lebeck of Bellevue,
Wash. by winning the eighteenth hole of their match. Lebeck won the
17th to put the match at all square, but hit her tee shot out of bounds
on hole 18. This will be a rematch of last year’s championship match at
Bend Golf & Country Club. Smego defeated Markle on their first playoff
hole for the championship.
The Championship matches for both the Amateur and Mid-Amateur will get
underway at 7:30am and 7:38am respectively. After their first 18 holes
are completed, the final 18 holes will get underway at 12:00pm and
12:08.
