Buelow Takes Florida Women's Match Play

WELLINGTON, Fla. (May 8, 2009)--Alexandria Buelow, Palm City defeated 2008 State Am Champion Gennifer Mendez of North Port, 2up to capture her first FWSGA State Amateur Match Play Championship at The Wanderers Club in Wellington, May 4-8, 2009.
Buelow, 18, the 1st seed, defeated 3rd seed Gennifer Mendez, 2up in the final match to secure the title. In route to the finals, Alexandria defeated Karen Hale in the first round 8 & 6. In the second round, Buelow defeated Diane Lang 5 & 3. Buelow advanced to the quarterfinals and upset 9th seed Jan Phillips 6 & 5. In the semifinals, Alexandria defeated Wendi Golden 3 & 2 to advance to the final match.
In the first flight, Ginny Orthwein of Wellington, defeated Terri Katz, of Boca Raton 4 & 3. The second flight featured Sandie St. Onge of Jensen Beach, defeating Sarah Phillips of Miami, 3 & 2. The third flight had Diane Armet of West Palm Beach, defeating Suzanne Gray of Howey-in-the-Hills 1up. Lastly, in the fourth flight Kay Waltman of Pinecrest defeated Bette Goldberg of Palm Beach Gardens 5 & 4.
The Championship consisted of 84 players playing an 18-hole seeding round Monday, May 4 and advancing to match play Tuesday, May 5th. After the qualifying round, players were divided into 4 flights. The championship flight consisted of 32 players with the additional 4 flights with 16 players in flights 1-3 and 8 players in flight 4.
