SFA duo wins Lions Spring Partnership
AUSTIN, TX (May 3, 2009)--A couple of college guys held off a pair of high schoolers to win the Muny Spring Partnership Sunday at Lions Municipal.

Stephen F. Austin University teammates Michael Smith and Chad Spencer opened the tournament Saturday with an 18-hole record 13-under 58.

Smith and Spencer never relinquished their lead Sunday, but Westlake High teammates Paul Otte and Tim Mitchell made it interesting down the stretch.

Otte and Mitchell, who opened Saturday with a 9-under 62, chipped away at the Lumberjacks' lead throughout the day and trailed by only two shots with two holes to play.

The college guys answered on the par-3 17th where Spencer sank a 30-foot birdie putt to give him and Smith a three-shot lead going to No. 18.

Both teams made par on the par-4 18th.

Smith and Spencer shot 4-under 67 Sunday for a winning 36-hole total of 17-under 125.

Otte and Mitchell had a 5-under 66 to finish alone in second at 14-under 128.

Defending champions Alex Ellis and Brenden Redfern, another pair of Westlake teammates, shot 64 Sunday to tie for third at 129.

The teams of Kevin Burke and Scott Turner, and Marcus Opheim and Jeff Opheim, also finished at 129.

The Opheims shot 62 Sunday to tie for low round of the day with Lake Travis teammates Joe Beck III and Hudson Hansard.

Beck and Hansard tied for sixth at 131 with yet another pair of Westlake players, Eli Juren and Hagen Fell.
