LEXINGTON, NC (July 14, 2005) -- Semi-final and Final round results of the 8th Carolinas Women’s Amateur Match Play Championship hosted by Sapona CC in Lexington, NC July 14, 2005. Par 35-37--72, 5772 yards.
Whitney Simons of Aiken, SC felt like Sapona CC was her home. She defeated 2002 Carolinas Women Match Play runner-up, Michelle Jarman 4&3. "I have played 10 rounds of golf on this course over the past two weeks, I feel right at home here at Sapona CC." Simons also qualified for the U.S. Women’s Amateur qualifier in Atlanta the week prior and feels that helped her to know exactly where to hit the ball and where not to hit the ball during her matches this week. Patricia Brogden, the only non-college golfer in the final four, had a rough day with the putter and could not keep Simons at bay in her early morning match.
UNCW rising senior and golf team member, Michelle Jarman shot an unbelievable 5-under par round in the semi-final match but everything seemed to change in the finals against Simons. "My driver let me down this afternoon - when you can’t hit the fairway you can’t score."
This is Simons first CGA win. She vows to return next year to defend her title where she will be seeded number one in the championship flight for match play.
This championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
