BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. – Vinny Giles of Richmond, Va., lost a four-stroke lead in the first four holes Thursday but rallied on the back nine to win the ninth annual Society of Seniors-John Kline Super Seniors golf tournament at Delray Dunes Country Club.
Four strokes up on Jack Vardaman of Washington, D.C., at the start of the final round, Giles birdied the par-4 10th and 11th holes enroute to 75-219 and won by three strokes over Rich Anderson of Bloomington, Minn., and Bob Hullender of San Antonio, who tied for second at 222 and final round scores of 73 and 74.
It was Giles’ second Society of Seniors title following his victory in the Dale Morey Championship in 2002 at nearby Quail Ridge Country Club. He won the U.S. Amateur in 1972, played on four Walker Cup teams and was the U.S. team captain in 1993.
Giles also won the 65-69 age group, Hullender the 70-74 division. Other winners were Romie Holder, Tulsa, Okla., 75-79, and Bob Harris, a Quail Ridge member, 80-older, each at 230. In all, at least 40 of the 79 starters shot their age at least once during the 54-hole tournament, the second of seven events this year.
