EULESS, Texas (March 1, 2009)--The sun came out and the winds died down for Sunday’s final round of the 2009 North Four Ball Championship. Texas Star Golf Course in Euless played host to the championship and its firm conditions tested the players on every shot. However, Sunday proved to be much more pleasant than the blustery conditions of round one. The better weather led to some better scoring, and provided an exciting finish to a challenging weekend.

The leader board was tightly packed at the top going into the final round and it remained that way through the turn on Sunday. Four teams were in contention throughout the back nine and three teams had a chance to force a playoff on the last hole.

The team of Rick Houston and Bill Steen came out of the pack to win the championship by one shot. Houston and Steen shot an impressive final round of six-under par 65 to go with their even par first round. The team made eight birdies on the day with Rick Houston of Midland accounting for six of them. According to Steen, a Dallas native, his partner played great all day and made some clutch putts. Houston converted a par saving up and down on the 18th hole and their score held up through the last two groups of the day.

The team of Greg Boots and Lucas Boyd fired a final round 66 to finish in second place. Boots and Boyd had got it to six-under at one point on the back nine, but a costly bogey on the 17th hole was too much to overcome. Boyd had a 15-foot putt for birdie to force a playoff, but it slid by on the right side. The team of Culley Barragan and Scott Maurer also made a charge on Sunday, but came up two shots short. Too many three-putts proved to be the downfall of the team as they had a birdie putt on the final hole to shoot six-under, but a bogey left them just off the pace.

Chuck Palmer and Jim Parrish, both of Dallas, ended up walking away with the Senior Division title. They had a slim one-shot lead after the first day, but some steady play in the final round earned them a seven-shot victory. Palmer made back-to-back birdies on holes10 and 11 to turn the championship decisively in their favor. A final round of one over par 72 by Palmer and Parrish put the title out of reach of their nearest competitors. Defending champions Chip Stewart and Larry Thomas tied for 2nd place with Steve Hughes and Gary Kirwan at 12-over par for the championship.
