AGC Diablo Valley Am: Players Battle Wind
BRENTWOOD, Calif. (March 14, 2009)--The weather won round one of the amateurgolf.com Diablo Valley Amateur, with gusty winds and cool temperatures preventing players from going low at Shadow Lakes Golf Club.
In the end, only Jonny Baxter of Pleasanton matched the par of 71, but with 10 players within four shots of his lead, and the tournament moving to the shorter Deer Ridge Golf Club for the final round, it should be a race to the finish. Nick Green of Chico sits one shot behind with a 1-over 72, with Weston Payne of Berkeley and Reid Scarff of Oroville another shot back at 2-over.
In the Senior Division, Ron Johnson of Walnut Creek leads with a 2-over 73. Last year's winner Mark Miller of Antioch opened with a 3-over 74, and Herb Jensen of Carmichael sits at 4-over with a 75.
In the Net Division, Kevin Logan of San Francisco leads with a 2-over 73, with Tad Van Pelt of San Francisco at 3-over with a 74. Al Bella of Pittsburg and Matt Romig of Marina del Rey are tied for third at 4-over.
The amateurgolf.com Diablo Valley Amateur is a points event for the amateurgolf.com Tournament Series Player Rankings. Currently four players are tied atop the Championship point standings, while Mark Miller of Antioch leads the Senior point standings and Noel Rush of Pacifica leads the Net points race.
Once again the Diablo Valley Amateur is being staged at both the Shadow Lakes and Deer Ridge Golf Clubs in Brentwood, CA. With Mount Diablo providing a stunning backdrop, the courses offer panoramic views of the East Bay Area, from the Diablo Range in the west to the San Joaquin Valley in the east, with dramatic elevation changes, native grasses that outline each hole, natural boulder outcroppings, and sharply sculpted bunkers.
