S. Carolina Mid-Am: Grimes wins first
CAMDEN, S.C. (Oct. 5, 2008) -- Jarrett Grimes is the 2008 SCGA Mid Amateur Champion after a final round of 68 and a three-day total of 7-under-par 203. Steve Liebler finished in second place three-shots behind with a score of 206.
Grimes was the model of consistency as he was the only player in the field to shoot in the 60’s all three rounds.
The 36 year old Columbia resident started the day with a three shot lead and quickly extended it to four after a birdie on the opening hole.
A bogey on the tough par four 4th was answered by a birdie on the 9th to shoot 33 on his opening nine holes. Two straight birdies on 13 and 14 were enough to put Grimes four shots clear of his nearest competitor and on cruise control to his first individual SCGA Major Championship.
2006 Champion, Steve Liebler, played well but his final day score of 68 left him three short of his second SCGA Mid Amateur trophy. The 2008 SCGA Amateur champion, Lee Palms, finished alone in third place at even par 210. Palm’s finish also wrapped up a SCGA Player of the Year title for the Greenville resident.
The 2008 SCGA Mid-Amateur Championship was played on the par 70 ~ 6,302 yard Camden Country Club course in Camden, SC.
The field consisted of 116 individuals playing 54 holes of stroke play and was cut to the low 60 and ties after the second round. The Mid-Amateur is one of 19 Major Championships conducted by the South Carolina Golf Association and is in its 27th year of existence. The 2009 Championship will take place on the Riverside course at Greenville Country Club.
