NorCal Valley Am: First round results

Steven Chung is one stroke off the lead heading into the final round of the NCGA Valley Amateur Championship at Winchester CC.

Chung fired a first-round three-under-par 69 to once again be in contention for the championship, having tied for first last year only to lose in a playoff.

The Morgan Creek member trails Dino Giacomazzi of Bayonet/Blackhorse who carded a four-under-par 68 to take the lead. Giacomazzi turned up the heat on the golf course with seven birdies in his round, which included an even-par front-nine and a four-under 32 on the back nine.

Brent Booth of Palo Alto fired a one-under-par 71 tied in third with NCGA Match Play Champion Matt Marshall who is currently ranked second on the NCGA points list. Meanwhile, defending champion and number one ranked Chris Marin is tied in 10th place with a four-over-par 76.

In the Senior championship, Dennis Younglove of El Macero holds a one-stroke lead over the field with a steady one-under-par 71. Fig Garden’s Douglas Johnson and Bob Fleming of New Sac eClub at Haggin Oaks are tied in second at even-par. Meanwhile, number one ranked senior Jeff Burda of Del Rio is tied in fourth at one-over-par 73.

Two-time defending champ, Gary Vanier is tied in ninth-place with a three-over-par 75. The tournament concludes Tuesday with final-round tee times starting at 7:30am.

ABOUT THE NCGA Valley Amateur

Played for the first time in 2004 as a replacement for the San Joaquin and Sacramento Valley championships, the NCGA Valley Amateur has become a staple in the tournament season. The 36- hole stroke play event is played at a venue in the San Joaquin or Sacramento valley each year and provides a top-level championship opportunity. Open to players with a handicap index of 5.4 or less, and seniors with a 7.4 handicap index or less.
